Relationships: Minding your Manners

Article Body:

Where have all the manners gone? I’m amazed at how being polite seems to be a vanishing art. Recently, I’ve seen articles online about how Americans are less well-mannered than we used to be. Taken as a whole, if Americans are less polite, this is affecting every area of society. Where I see it doing the most damage is in relationships.

When we first meet a potential mate, we put on our “dating face.” We show our best side and we mind our manners. After all, we want to make a good impression on the person we are interested in. We want our date to think well of us.

As we get to know each other, we begin to get comfortable. Sometimes too comfortable. We begin to “let it all hang out.” We start showing our sloppy habits or even begin acting in a way that could be obnoxious. We begin to expect our chosen one to accept us as we are. If we develop a committed relationship, we may even stop minding our manners at all, then blame our partners when they call us on the carpet, saying, “You knew I was this way when you met me.”

When people choose to marry, they say they will cherish each other. They promise to love and respect each other. They agree to hold their partnership as valuable. Yet, soon after (or maybe even before they marry) they begin to treat their partners with contempt, disrespect, even with cruelty. Sometimes they even treat strangers better than the one they chose to love. Strange…

What happened here? Is this a foregone conclusion? Is that just the way it is? Not necessarily, but it can be. It’s understandable that we relax when we become comfortable with another person. It doesn’t mean we have to relax our manners. I don’t mean being stiff and formal with our chosen partner. But it’s important to keep up the good habits that we used to win our partner.

Nothing is “just the way it is” that you didn’t choose to make that way. To say, “That’s just the way I am” is the same as admitting that you refuse to accept responsibility for your behavior. When you treat your partner with contempt, you are acting contemptibly. When you disrespect your partner, you are disrespecting yourself.

Think about the way you acted when you were first getting to know the person you are with. How did you act then? What things did you do to endear yourself to that person? How did you talk to him/her? What have you stopped doing that was helpful? What can you start doing again that will bring back the respect to your relationship? Remember, you have the power to choose more helpful behaviors. When your elders told you to mind your P’s and Q’s, maybe they knew what they were talking about!

What Can You Learn From Consumer Magazines About Marketing Online?

Article Body:

Many freelance writers have been watching the falling readership of newspapers and magazines and started preparing themselves for the shift of audiences online, believing that the old print medium is dying. I was one of the many eager to be ready for the millions of people expected to start arriving and adopting the internet as their new home for news and information. However, in the UK there is still a healthy offline writers market worth £385 million and experiencing growth of 10% every year.

Consumer magazines, produced by companies such as Virgin Atlantic, Waitrose and Walt Disney, are being heralded as the essential corporate marketing tool. They are believed to be read by 79% of the population, and can increase their sponsor’s sales by 8%.

A recent study by the Association of Publishing Agencies (APA), of 50 titles and 17,000 interviews, found that 78% prefer communication via consumer magazines than any other marketing media.

The study reached these key conclusions:

• The average time spent reading a consumer magazine was 25 minutes.
• Two thirds will keep their magazine for 1 week.
• Engaging with the magazines has a positive impact on the customer’s relationship with the brand.
• 80% actively responded. Popular actions were trying a recipe, visiting a store or buying a featured product.

Consumer magazines are being hailed in the UK as a powerful, and largely untapped, tool for developing an affinity and desire for an association with brands. By providing a “substance read”, rather than blatant advertising, they are valued by consumers and engaged with, rather than immediately regarded as junk to be binned.

“Research found that this engagement with the magazines has a positive impact on customers’ relationships with the brands,” said Julia Hutchison, APA director, “It delivers above all other direct marketing the holy grail of permission marketing and participation media.”

The APA believes there has been a dramatic improvement in the quality of consumer magazines as companies wake up to positive impact of providing high quality editorial and articles of value.

The good news for writers is that consumer magazines aren’t reliant on advertising to be self sufficient, but are funded as part of a company’s marketing mix. This presents a stable market and one experiencing yearly growth.

Another recent study has suggested that there is still plenty of enthusiasm for consumer magazines in the US. A USA Strategies survey of B2B executives found that print was still preferred for promoting their products and services. The perceived lack of online metrics remains the big stumbling block for promoting on the web.

“A lot of the distrust regarding the internet stemmed from the fact that although marketers can track click-through rates and page views, they still have trouble relating those metrics to actual sales,” explained Patrick Yanahan, USA Strategies president, “That should be a wake-up call to advertisers and marketers everywhere. For new media to be successful there has to be measurable results.”

The survey found that most executives still regarded websites as mere brand promotion vehicles, and that targeted search marketing had little value. It was editorial coverage and print ads they favoured as the main drivers in building customer trust and pushing sales.

Consumer magazines are highly valued as effective marketing tools because they provide content of value to the consumer. They are able to develop the sales process by building trust and confidence, rather than filling themselves with one page sales pitches. The consensus is that you now sell through information, not advertising.

Producing a consumer magazine is an expensive and complex process. However, it is relatively cheap to be able to apply the same marketing philosophy to your business website. Static brochure websites are now dated. Your web presence should become an evolving portal of news and articles that entices visitors to make return visits, or subscribe via RSS, so they can learn more about you and your services.

If you’re a freelance writer, you might want to investigate the offline market for consumer magazines. They have a wide readership, stable funding and are experiencing continuing growth.

If you have a business website then you should consider applying some of the lessons learned from consumer magazines. By providing regularly updated news and articles of value, you can turn your website into an effective vehicle for engaging with prospects and turning them into customers.

Google 2.0 “Will Google Change?”

Article Body:

It’s a fact that Google was the leader of the Web 2.0 Era, setting many standards that forced the used to be market leaders to silently follow and imitate what they are doing. Lately Google concept in email has showed the old companies’ greed, Microsoft for instance had been charging for only one Gigabyte of storage what they called premium, and even yahoo’s plus account was poor. Google gave users a quality 2 Gig plus of storage along with incredible features like POP3 and many others for free, but our old fellows felt the threat and just caught Google’s back. The competition is getting hotter more & more; Google’s new line of Office web applications is also a tough challenge for the web 1.0 masters, but Microsoft Live is also a strong response by the Redmond monster, and promising to be significant and popular. Yahoo is striving to update their entire architecture, and they have just added integrated messenger in their website just like Google did (long time ago!), they have acquired many Web 2.0 hot stuff like Del.ici.ous and many others. But Google seems to be a little bit calm nowadays, what are they making? Rumors are talking about a complete upgrade in Google business services model, Google is preparing an all in one small businesses service package, a domain name centered service that allow sellers to establish their services while entirely relying on Google’s services, any can use his customized email at Google’s Gmail, other endless services ranging from organizing and collaboration through Google’s Office, to marketing through Adsense & Adwords, while new unexpected services may hit the market and make a big difference like small accounting application for Google business subscribers, a PayPal like service for online payments (other than Google wallet). But will that be enough for Google to catch more and more market share? No matter what Google is preparing, it is facing a critical situation; the aggressive response of Web 1.0 gurus will make it a hard job. The current problem is Google regular users , those who won’t make online businesses nor have interest in Adsense or Adwords.Google has a significant layout but seems dull when compared to the new sleek Web 2.0 styles; Yahoo for example has revamped their layout to be very wonderful & eye-catching. Microsoft has also varnished their live interface recently. Compared to the new Yahoo mail; Gmail looks very classic and even poor, something that requires a serious follow-up by the Googsters .Some of old Yahoo, Hotmail & AOL users turned back to use their old emails as they are powerful, sleek and most of all same to Gmail, no body will be loyal to Gmail. Today’s consumers are convinced that all companies are evil and that they should pick the best offer every time. The bottom line is Google should update their look to be more Web 2.0, acquire or cooperate with some web 2.0 entertainment vendor to compete with Microsoft and Yahoo in the entertainment field. However, it looks that the web will be a bloody battle field for a along time, and the only winner is the consumer.

What is Social Bookmarking and Why Should Bloggers Care?

Article Body:

What is Social Bookmarking and why should bloggers care? Good questions! It's been around for a long time but is just now coming to the attention of the blogosphere.
Social bookmarking is the process of setting up an account on one or many of the social bookmarking sites like Technorati, Del.icio.us, MySpace, Stumbleupon, Google Bookmarks, Yahoo My Web, Digg, Spurl and many others. These seem to be the most popular. Setting up an account on any of these services is quite easy because they don't want your life story, usually just a user name and password. So - the first time you go to these sites it will take a bit longer but once your account is set up, it's a matter of clicking to the site and bookmarking your page.

Bookmark your page? What page? You bookmark the page of your blog post that you just did. You can put keywords into the form too so others can find your post by keyword. This does two things - you get a link to your post - and we all know how important incoming links are for the search engines - and you make your URL findable by keyword for anyone who uses that social bookmarking service and searches by keyword.

Think of these sites as mini search engines. If you use any of the 'big' search engines to search by keyword you'll get about a zillion returns. How do you choose? Can they all be relevant to what you want to know? Of course not. By using these social bookmarking search engines, the results will nearly always be relevant if the poster picks good keywords and there won't be a zillion returns.
How can you leverage the use of social bookmarking sites? Easy - there are plug-ins available for most blog platforms that allow you to put a line of social bookmarking sites across the bottom of each post. All your reader has to do is click on the icon for the site of his choice and bookmark that post in his own account. Presto - another incoming link!

If you are a blogger, there is really no easier way to get incoming links and get noticed by the search engines. Give it a try!

The "Fab Four" That Will Get You Into Trouble

Article Body:

THE "FAB FOUR"... THAT WILL GET YOU INTO TROUBLE
(And... Another 4 That Will Help You Stay Out Of Trouble)
© Lee Wise All rights reserved

Want to get into trouble quick? Practice the first "fabulous four" below and you will.

Want help in staying out of trouble? Strive to put into practice the second "fabulous four" and it will help.

THE "FABULOUS FOUR" THAT WILL GET YOU INTO TROUBLE

The First...

Lack of self-control.

If I have a major area of weakness, don't respect my tendencies toward self-addiction in that area, and show little, if any, self restraint when it comes to taking the proper precautions that could cause my downfall, I am bound to get into trouble.

The Second...

Anger and violence.

Ever hear of "road rage"? And what about rage in general? Anger that is not consistently managed well will get me into trouble.

Violent actions repeated on a regular basis: these will most assuredly cause me to be entrapped in a snare of my own making. Not to mention the agony and despair my actions could force on others.

The Third...

Being argumentative.

Not as serious as rage and violence, but deadly in terms of building relationships with others.

Don't be a person who is quick to fight: a verbal gladiator if you please.

Get a reputation of being a snappy, cantankerous person and watch the distance between you and others increase over time.

Lonely is not a pretty word.
And a much less pretty experience.

The Fourth...

Loving money the wrong way.

And by the wrong way I mean placing too high a value on gaining wealth with little concern how it is acquired.

In the end, I will lose in the process of "gaining" if I remain out of balance in my approach to the acquisition of wealth.

THE "FAB FOUR" THAT WILL HELP YOU STAY OUT OF TROUBLE

The First...

Be friendly.

Genuinely care for people.

It's an "old" truth but true nonetheless: people like friendly people.

If I work on being friendly, it will help me stay out of trouble with others.

Is that a guarantee?
Of course not.
But being friendly does help.

The Second...

Be faithful.

Be faithful in your relationships and responsibilities. People like people they can count on.

People respond well to people they can trust.

The Third...

Share good advice.

Excellent counsel given at the right time, with right motives, in the right way is invaluable.

People appreciate people who share practical tips for living with them -- especially when the timing is right.

The Fourth...

Show respect to people.

Value their talents, be sympathetic during their ups and downs, share their joys, and express understanding in the middle of their hardships.

Treat people with dignity.

People value respectful people.

A "BONUS FAB FOUR" JUST FOR YOU

Number One...

Grow in your ability to influence others in a positive way. Doing so can bring you personal satisfaction and a deep sense of accomplishment.

Give yourself the gift of growing in your leadership abilities.

Number Two...

Gain experience or knowledge that will cause you to grow, advance, become better, or give you an emotional lift.

Give yourself the gift of time for self-development.

Number Three...

Follow the powerful and productive desires of your heart.

Honor them.
Make room for them.
Cultivate them.

Give yourself the gift of pursuing the positive passions of your heart.

And Number Four...

Continually strive for balance.

Seek to balance...

Work with pleasure.
Seriousness with laughter.
Self-development with "down time."
Caring for others with caring for yourself.
Personal discipline with spontaneous creativity.

A SUGGESTED STRATEGY FOR PERSONAL GROWTH

1. Review each "fab four" set.
2. Highlight what interests you.
3. Take some action as soon as possible.
4. Celebrate after the action has been taken.
5. Plan the next action you will take.
6. Summarize your thoughts and actions in a success journal.
7. Repeat the process.

Yours for a day filled with beautiful moments in time,

Lee

Ocean City, New Jersey – A Model For Wholesome Family Fun

Article Body:

Ocean City is a Jersey Shore beach resort that sets itself apart from other beachfront towns in going all out to insure that its reputation as “America’s Greatest Family Resort” is true to its motto. Its heritage is deep rooted in Christian values. Alcohol sales are prohibited and there are no bars or nightclubs. The attractions along the boardwalk are controlled by the city to insure they are safe, secure, and provide wholesome family fun, at a modest cost.

Located 65 miles from Philadelphia, and 125 miles from New York City, it attracts family vacationers from the tri-sate area looking for a family destination with lots of wholesome fun.

This family resort destination has many attractions and accommodations that are family oriented and reasonably priced. Lodging including motels, bed and breakfasts, hotels, and vacation home rentals; family oriented restaurants, both sit in and take-out; shopping, including clothing, t-shirts, souvenirs, and antiques; and of course its beautiful beach and fun filled boardwalk.

The boardwalk -- 50 feet in width, 2 1/2 miles long, has many eateries, taffy and fudge shops, and a large amusement pier, Gillian's Wonderland Pier, with a 140 foot Ferris wheel, kiddie cars, roller coasters, a miniature golf course and a water park.

In the early morning, the boardwalk is frequented by joggers and bikers, and as afternoon approaches, they begin to attract many teenagers, and by evening, the families dominate.

Ocean City has a long history of music and summer concerts with the Music Pier, a noted landmark on the boardwalk, being the venue of distinction. In the summer, the Music Pier is the home of the Ocean City Pops orchestra providing quality entertainment with many soloist artists appearing from the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.

The beach is eight miles long, well-maintained and safely monitored; Beach fees and badges are required.

On rainy days you have a choice of things to do. You can visit the Bayside Center to see a museum and models of ships. With three floors of bay view front porches, it’s a great place to view the sunset. Or you can take in a movie at the Strand theatre on the where they show G, PG and PG-13 movies.

Looking for a cultural alternative to the boardwalk? Visit the Ocean City Arts Center , they have arts classes, exhibitions, crafts shows, and other events.

There are also has many annual family events including the century old Baby Parade, the popular A Night in Venice, and the Miss New Jersey Pageant.

Being a family destination, it is not surprising taht there is a wide variety of moderately priced family restaurants that are child friendly. Most restaurants are found along the boardwalk and on Asbury Avenue. However, if you are looking for a fine dining experience, you are not likely to find it in Ocean City. For gourmet food, you can hop on the parkway north about 20 minutes to Atlantic City or south about 30 minutes to Cape May for a wide choice of fine dining restaurants.

Interested in Ocean City history? Take a walk through the historic district and visit the brick Tabernacle on Wesley Ave. It’s the location of Ocean city’s first house of worship, a wooden tabernacle that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1944. Take a walk along the 300 block of Central Avenue and see the large 100 year old Victorian style homes, or the New Brighton Inn circa 1882, on Fifth St, home of one of the city founders Rev. William Burrell. It is known as the "marrying house" because of the many weddings he performed there.
